The Story Behind the Hickling Crossbody
Some products are created simply to serve a purpose. Others are inspired by a place.
The Hickling Crossbody belongs firmly in the second category. Named after the beautiful village of Hickling and the nearby Hickling Broad in Norfolk, this bag reflects a landscape known for its open skies, quiet waterways and timeless beauty.
Designed to accompany everyday life, the Hickling combines traditional craftsmanship with carefully selected materials to create a bag that is built to be used, appreciated and enjoyed for years to come.
Inspired by Norfolk
At Hill and Hide, many of our products take their names from places across Norfolk.
Hickling is one of the county’s most treasured locations, home to the largest of the Norfolk Broads and surrounded by reed beds, wildlife and peaceful walking trails. Its sense of calm and understated character provided the inspiration for a bag that is both practical and elegant.
Rather than chasing changing fashions, the Hickling was designed with the belief that good design should remain relevant for years, not just seasons.
Crafted from Premium Vegetable-Tanned Leather
The body of the Hickling is crafted from premium Lamport vegetable-tanned leather.
Vegetable tanning is one of the oldest methods of producing leather, using natural tannins to create a material that is both durable and full of character. Over time, the leather develops a rich patina, meaning every bag gradually becomes unique to its owner.
Natural markings and subtle variations in the leather are not imperfections—they are part of what makes each Hickling individual.
English Bridle Leather Straps
To complement the body of the bag, the Hickling features black Sedgwick English bridle leather straps.
Renowned throughout the leather industry, Sedgwick’s English bridle leather is respected for its strength, refined finish and exceptional durability. Traditionally used in equestrian equipment, it offers the ideal combination of structure and longevity for a bag that is intended to be carried every day.
The contrast between the smooth black bridle leather and the vegetable-tanned body creates a timeless appearance that works equally well in town or the countryside.
Solid Brass Hardware
Every detail contributes to the finished product.
The Hickling is fitted with solid brass hardware, chosen not only for its classic appearance but also for its long-term durability. Brass develops its own character with age, complementing the natural ageing of the leather and creating a bag that becomes even more distinctive over time.
Rather than trying to resist the passing of time, the Hickling is designed to embrace it.
Designed for Everyday Life
The Hickling was created to offer a practical everyday companion without unnecessary complexity.
Its clean silhouette, secure closure and comfortable crossbody design make it suitable for daily use while allowing the natural beauty of the materials to take centre stage.
Every design decision was guided by simplicity, durability and functionality.
Built to Be Used
We believe leather goods should not be hidden away for special occasions.
A quality leather bag should accompany its owner on daily errands, countryside walks, weekends away and everything in between. Every journey adds to its story, and every mark becomes part of its character.
With proper care, the Hickling is designed to remain a trusted companion for many years.
A Reflection of Our Philosophy
The Hickling Crossbody represents what Hill and Hide stands for: honest craftsmanship, carefully chosen materials and products inspired by the landscapes we call home.
It is not designed to follow trends or to be replaced after a few seasons. Instead, it is made with the hope that it will become more beautiful with every year of use, carrying not only your belongings but also the memories created along the way.
