Denim and leather are two materials with something important in common: they are not designed to remain looking brand new forever.
Both become more personal with use. Denim softens and fades, while quality leather develops a richer colour and patina. Marks and subtle changes gradually become part of the character of the material.
That shared ability to age beautifully is one of the reasons we chose to bring denim and English bridle leather together in our Denim Tote.
A Material Made for Everyday Life
Denim has a long history as a practical, hard-wearing fabric.
Originally valued for workwear, its durability has helped it remain relevant for generations. Yet denim has also developed far beyond its utilitarian beginnings and has become one of the world’s most recognisable textiles.
For us, that combination of practicality and timeless style makes it particularly well suited to an everyday bag.
Why Pair Denim with Leather?
Denim provides a relaxed, tactile body for the bag, while leather adds structure and strength where it matters.
For the handles of our Denim Tote, we chose Conker Sedgwick English bridle leather.
English bridle leather has traditionally been produced for demanding equestrian applications and is prized for its strength, durability and distinctive finish. Against the deep indigo tones of denim, the warm Conker leather creates a contrast that will become even more interesting as both materials age.
The combination isn’t purely about appearance. Using substantial bridle leather for the handles provides a reassuring feel in the hand and creates a strong connection between the tote and our traditional leatherwork.
Designed to Change with You
One of our favourite things about natural materials is that they record their use.
With time, denim can soften and develop subtle variations in colour, particularly around areas that are frequently handled or folded.
The Conker bridle leather will change too. Regular handling gradually contributes to the character and patina of the leather.
The result is a bag that shouldn’t look exactly the same several years from now as it does on the day it leaves our workshop.
We think that’s something worth celebrating.
It’s What’s Inside That Counts Too
The Denim Tote isn’t simply an unlined piece of denim.
Inside, we’ve added a cotton lining, creating a more considered and finished interior while providing another layer between your belongings and the outer fabric.
Small details continue throughout the design, including Hill and Hide leather branding on both the exterior and interior.
These aren’t necessarily the first things you’ll notice from across a room, but they’re part of what makes a thoughtfully made bag different.
Made for More Than One Season
Trends come and go remarkably quickly.
Denim and leather haven’t.
Both have remained part of everyday life for generations, and that’s precisely what appealed to us when designing this bag.
The Denim Tote isn’t intended to be something used for a summer and forgotten. It’s designed for shopping, weekends away, days in town and countless ordinary journeys in between.
Those everyday moments are ultimately what will give it its character.

Leather remains at the heart of Hill and Hide, but good craftsmanship doesn’t have to mean working with only one material.
Introducing denim gives us an opportunity to combine traditional leatherwork with another enduring material while retaining the qualities we value: durability, practicality and timeless design.
Paired with Conker Sedgwick English bridle leather, the Denim Tote represents a slightly more relaxed side of Hill and Hide—while still being made with the same attention to materials and detail.
